For students with good listening and speaking skills in Chinese; and ability to read and write more than 300 Chinese characters
Prerequisite/progression of the course
This course is mainly designed for overseas Chinese 2nd generation who can listen and speak Chinese, but would like to have a intensive course to improve their skills in reading and writing Chinese short passages.
People without Chinese family background, but have the similar needs, are also welcome.
You can take HSK test Level 3 ("Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi" in Chinese, a standard Chinese proficiency test for non-native speakers) to find out your level of Chinese language before the course begins.
The test is not compulsory, and you do not need to choose your course on the basis of the test result. The test is available online:

Course content, structure and teaching
This course will focus on reading and writing short passages in Chinese of Mandarin Chinese Elementary Level. Through the course, participants are going to study 8 lessons in the textbook Step by Step Chinese (1), which includes some funny stories, short poems, news selected from newspapers and websites, etc.
Reading and writing skills will be taught at each lesson.

Learning Objectives
After learning the course, participants shall master the 4 types of reading; understand the method to recognize of noun, verb, adjective and measure words; read Chinese stories, news and so on. Write some short passages in Chinese.

Course literature
The course is based on a textbook called “Step by Step Chinese"(1), supplemented by other references. The textbook will be made in PDF file and sent to participants via e-mail before each lesson.
