For students with good listening and speaking skills in Chinese.
Prerequisite/progression of the course
This course is mainly designed  for overseas Chinese 2nd generation who can listen and speak Chinese, but would like to have a intensive course to improve their skills in reading and writing Chinese characters.
People without Chinese family background, but have similar needs, are also welcome.
You can take HSK test Level 3 ("Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi" in Chinese, a standard Chinese proficiency test for non-native speakers) to find out your level of Chinese language before the course begins.
The test is not compulsory, and you do not need to choose your course on the basis of the test result. The test is available online:

Course content, structure and teaching
This course will focus on reading and writing Chinese characters of Mandarin Chinese Beginner’s Level. Through the course, students are going to study four ways of forming Chinese characters ( pictographic characters, self-explanatory characters, associative characters and phonogram ); to study single characters and mixed characters; to study 50  most commonly used radicals in Chinese characters; to study characters of similar shapes, homophones and polyphonic; to study  how to look up Chinese characters in Chinese dictionaries, etc.  In addition, games to help memorizing Chinese characters, methods to learn Chinese characters; online teaching and learning resources and some interesting short passages in Chinese will be introduced.

Learning Objectives
After learning the course, participants shall master the 4 ways of forming Chinese characters; meaning elements and sound-bearing elements of characters; basic strokes of Chinese characters; stroke orders of Chinese characters; exercises to write around 300 Chinese characters.

The course is based on a textbook called “New Practical Chinese Reader"(1), supplemented by other references.
