What is illegality? A moral or legal concept? Is it against or simply marginal to the rule of law? What is the relationship between illegality and human rights? Is the informal economy illegal? Is an undocumented migrant illegal? Can a person be illegal? These and other questions related to illegality and related concepts will be explored at this research seminar.


The seminar engages in discussions about a Latin America which is "extended" in a geographical sense, thus including the US and Europe. The extended character of Latin America comprises immigrants, and the Latinos in the US. It also includes problems of a global character, which nevertheless often are located within the Latin American borders, such as drug production and trade.


Key note speakers are Professor Nicholas De Genova , University of London, and writer and journalist, Diego Osorno, Mexico.

The seminar is organized in cooperation with the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Copenhagen and Intercultural Studies , CUID, at Roskilde University.
