Prerequisite/progression of the course
The course is only open to students whose first language is not English. It is not possible to register both HR 63 and HR 65 in the same semester.
This course starts at the B2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference and works toward achievement at the C1 level.
This course is CEMS accredited (English writing test only)
Course content, structure and teaching
To introduce students to the types of text used in business and communication, and to develop English writing skills in general. Students are introduced to various formats of text i.e. project reports, business letters, strategy proposals, etc. They will learn to plan, organize, develop and revise their drafts of the final product. Relevant grammar, expressions and vocabulary will be covered. Though the emphasis is on writing, the course will also comprise oral discussions. Seminar style teaching with interactive class discussions and peer critique. Regular attendance, completion of written assignments, and active participation in discussions are essential for success in this course
The course's development of personal competences
Interpersonal and intercultural communication competences. Fluency in English on both a social and business level. Ability to formalise argumentation.
Learning Objectives
The learning objectives to achieve within Effective Writing in English are:
· To be able to express oneself in writing on a wide range of general or professional topics in a clear and user-friendly manner
· To be able to expand and support points of view at some length with subsidiary points, reasons and relevant examples
· To be able to produce clear, smoothly-flowing, well-structured text, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices
· To develop a good command of a broad lexical repertoire allowing gaps to be readily overcome with circumlocutions; few avoidance strategies.
· To develop a solid command of idiomatic expressions and collocations
· To produce clearly intelligible continuous writing which follows standard layout and paragraphing conventions. Spelling and punctuation should be accurate but may show signs of mother tongue influence
· To maintain a consistently high degree of grammatical control
Type of examination, exam aids and assessment
4-hour written examination – computer (Word) with print. Closed book.
There are no dictionaries or exam aids allowed.
Assessment is based on the 7-point grading scale.
