Course content, structure and teaching
Course content: The aim of this course is to explore how transnational integration challenges the overlap typically assumed of modern polities between socio-cultural identities, economic practices and state boundaries and examine the conceptual challenges that this gives rise to. The course discusses competing perspectives on how these conditions influence national states and critically examines the main proposals for how to reconceive of society and its relationship to the political sphere. Concepts such as sovereignty, legitimate power, identity, citizenship, democracy and governance will be examined and appraised against the background of the need for trans-border cooperation. In so doing, the course combines historical perspectives on state formation and contemporary debates about the European Union.
The course's development of personal competences
The course involves a mix of lectures, guest lectures and case studies. Throughout the course students are encouraged to participate actively allowing them to engage in analytical work in cooperation with their fellow students. Furthermore, students are required to give presentations in order to develop their presentational skills.
