The main characteristics of the supply chain management approach are customer orientation, relationship management, thinking in flows and processes and the borderless organisation. The main tasks of supply chain management are the design, organisation of supply and supplier relationships, production and distribution networks for the provision of the customers with the required goods in due time at lowest costs. There are many strategic, tactical and operative decisions involved which relate to three generic supply chain activities:
  1. the integration and synchronisation of all business processes within and between organisations; decision-making regarding design of the supply chain and supply chain relations
  2. the harmonisation of the flow of goods between the suppliers‘ supplier and the customers‘ customers
  3. the demand-driven supply of information for all involved actors in the supply chain.

Strategy – networks - processes

Overall, SCM includes the management of the flows of goods, related information and cooperation. These management tasks are the central elements of the concentration’s themes, which refer to supply chain design (= strategic decision level), supply chain planning (= tactical decision level) and supply chain operations (= operative level).
