Preparing your Stay

Practical information

I have exams at my home university the first week of the program, can I arrive late?
No, this is not possible. ISUP is a very intensive program and we expect all international students to arrive in time for orientation held on 23 June 2012. Students who are not able to fulfill these criteria will not be accepted into the program. As an alternative, the ISUP Secretariat can try to help you by setting up a proctored exam at CBS, please contact us at summer@cbs.dk for further information.
Will CBS arrange housing for me?
Yes, you can apply for Housing to be arranged through CBS. Check here for further information on location, prices etc.: Housing.
Do I need a visa to enter Denmark to participate in ISUP?
You can check the Danish Immigration Services homepage to see whether or not you need to apply for a visa for entering Denmark at www.nyidanmark.dk/en-us . Students from many countries, including the U.S., don't need to apply for a visa if their stay in Denmark is under three months.
Students who do need a visa should apply as soon as possible, as the Danish Immigration Services can take up to three months to approve a visa application. Usually, students who come to Denmark for participating in ISUP will get a tourist visa for the period the program lasts.
Can I combine participation in ISUP with travelling in Europe?
The International Summer University Program is an intensive, academic program providing students the possibility of taking courses in an international environment over the summer. Participation in ISUP is not a holiday and students are expected to be present at class sessions and be engaged in their readings and class discussions throughout the program.
As a supplement to the academic program, ISUP offers the International students various cultural and social activities in the Copenhagen area, as well as around Denmark and to nearby European cities. Expecting to do weekend travelling on top of these trips is NOT realistic. ISUP recommends that students plan other foreign travel for before or after studying with ISUP.
Do I have to bring my own laptop?
You will have access to CBS computer labs during CBS’ opening hours. If it is important for you to have regular computer access, we encourage you to bring your own laptop as the computer labs and CBS buildings are not open at all times.
There is wireless network access for laptop computers in most buildings at CBS and all of our housing facilities have cable based internet. The only way to make use of these facilities is to bring your own laptop. For information on technical requirements, please check www.e-campus.dk . Using the guest login you can go to the top menu bar and pick IT & Mail and then guides. Please note: It may be necessary for you to have special cords and/or plugs for you to use with your laptop when connecting to electricity in Denmark.
Will I have full access to the library and its facilities?
All ISUP participants are encouraged to make full use of the CBS library and its facilities. CBS has a state of the art library with comprehensive collections within social sciences, culture and communication. ISUP students will be given access to the library facilities, as well as to all electronic journals that CBS subscribes.
Are there any scholarships available to study with ISUP?
At this time, we do not offer any scholarships for participation in the International Summer University Program. However, it may be possible that your home university has scholarships for taking part in international education opportunities.
How much money can I expect to spend during my stay in Copenhagen?
Naturally your expenses while in Denmark will depend on your living situation and your own spending habits. Since it is difficult to know what those are, we can only give you a general idea of some of the costs you will encounter in Denmark. On top of the examples listed below comes participation in social activities and optional weekend trips to nearby European cities.

Course literature

Do I need to do any reading before the course begins?
The work load in ISUP is 225 student work hours per course and this includes participating in classes, course reading, group work and exams/written projects. This means that a large portion of the learning process in our courses is outside of class, so students should be prepared to spend plenty of time reading before ISUP and during the program.
The final course literature and reading lists will be updated in the individual course descriptions on our website continuously as we receive them from the faculty. The final details will be updated no later than May 31. We suggest that you start reading before hand to give you an advantage before you start the program. During the program it will be very difficult to catch up if you fall behind on the readings. Due to the intensive nature of our Summer University there is very little time to prepare for exams, as classes end Thursday, 26 July and exam week begins 30 July 2012.
Do I need to buy literature and text books for all my courses?
To obtain the optimum learning experience from each course, it is essential to do all required reading as well as attend all of the class sessions. Even though a copy of the required literature for each course will be available in the CBS library, you will be sharing this resource with many other students and cannot rely that it will always be available to you. Therefore, we advise students to buy the required text(s) and use the CBS Library for supplementary reading. Please note that some ISUP exams are open book, and the sharing of textbooks during an exam is strictly prohibited.
Where and when can I buy the literature for my courses?
The CBS bookstore Academic Books  will carry all required books as well as compendia and course packs for ISUP courses. The books and compendia will be on sale from the beginning of June.
Note: Books which are written by the same author that hold the same title may vary in content from Europe, USA and Asia. Courses in ISUP will always use the European version where applicable.
