Prerequisite/progression of the course
No specific qualifications are required. A general knowledge about the Americas and international politics is recommended.
Course content, structure and teaching
Introduction to current politics in Latin America. Politics and identity. Identity politics. Ethnic, racial and national identities. Historical background. Case studies: Venezuela, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba. Latin America in a regional and international context. Economic aspects of current politics in Latin America.
The course will consist of 10 teaching sessions (two periods), once a week. Each session will have a teacher’s presentation. Students are also urged to do 10-minute presentations.
Theories will be general theories within political and cultural studies.
The academic competences acquired will be:
  • General knowledge of Latin American politics
  • Knowledge of historical background
  • Knowledge of the relations between politics and identity in Latin America
  • More specific knowledge of national cases
  • Knowledge about economic aspects of Latin Am. politics.
The course's development of personal competences
Analytical competences (especially as related to politics and identity), oral presentation and dialogue.
Learning Objectives
Good knowledge and understanding of current politics in Latin America; understanding and knowledge of identity problems in Latin America; general understanding and knowledge of historical background; ability to formulate a problem within the general frame of the course and discussing/analyzing its main implications.
Type of examination, exam aids and assessment
A written assignment of max.10 pages on a topic (problem statement) within the course theme, elaborated by the student in collaboration with (and accepted by) the teacher.
Grade according to the 7-point scale, no second examiner.
