Course content, structure and teaching
The course provides an overview and an in-depth discussion of the key concepts and contrasting perspectives at play in the field of Business in Society (BiS). Based on a particular focus on corporate social responsibility (CSR), the course will look at the motives and practices shaping MNC strategies and the impact MNCs have on their stakeholders. During the course students will discuss ethical theories and how they relate to contemporary business.
The emphasis is on the managerial aspects of CSR – from the point of view of corporate strategy and policy-making. The impact of MNC activities will be discussed in relation to “company-internal dimensions” (e.g. motives, leadership, codes of ethics, informal and formal programmes, human resources) and “company-external dimensions (e.g. local government policies, the regulatory framework, local communities and the environment). In particular, the stakeholder approach to CSR is emphasized and discussed in relation to different stakeholders such as shareholders, employees, consumers, suppliers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and government. The course incorporates a number of current Danish and international cases.
A cross-cutting question is: how can an MNC both act responsibly while providing shareholder value?
