Prerequisite/progression of the course
Students must have a basic knowledge of managerial economics and of basic micro- and macro-economics
Course content, structure and teaching
The course will cover the following areas:
  • Historical description of the industry (nationalized vs. privatized)
  • Business model definition and explanation; application to the industry
  • Industrial classifications (e.g. generic strategies, strategic groups, geographical, product, etc.)
  • Customer segmentation and revenue maximization; profit maximization
  • Explanation and application of triple-bottom line to the industry
The course's development of personal competences
The participants should gain knowledge of different historical, strategic, managerial and marketing issues concerning the subjects of:
  • Historical development of the global aviation industry
  • Current and future trends taking place
  • Aviation’s local, national, and international impacts
  • Direct and indirect impacts on tourism and other relevant areas
These subjects are crucial to understanding the aviation industry’s core and its greater impact on a nation’s infrastructure and development for the future. Students will gain historical knowledge that will provide a foundational perspective, which will be supplemented through current and future trends to improve industrial understanding.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the course, the student must be able to:
  • Describe, classify, structure, and combine the concepts, theories, methods, and models of the course
  • Develop analytical skills for industry analyses
  • Identify, develop, and utilize the concepts, theories, methods, and models of the course across similar industries
  • Describe and apply industrial classifications across industries
  • Describe and apply customer segmentation/dynamic pricing within the airline sector
  • Describe the business model concept, and apply it at both the industry level and firm level
  • Describe and apply the triple-bottom line framework within the airline sector
  • Application and measurement of the airline industry’s impact across sectors (i.e. hospitality, tourism, etc.)
Teaching methods
Lectures, case analyses and mini-group projects
Examination
Individual oral exam based on a mini project in groups of maximum 4 students. It is possible to write your Bachelor project within the topics of the course.
