Prerequisite/progression of the course
Students are advised to have taken a survey course in American history before joining this course
All teaching as well as the exam is in English
Course content, structure and teaching
Course participants will acquire a knowledge and understanding of the political institutions and agendas in the USA and Latin America. The themes covered in the course vary from year to year but always provide an empirical point of departure for a discussion of the socio-political processes on the two continents. The ability of the students to analyse political and social issues is the main focus of the course.
Learning Objectives
The student must be able to:
  • Demonstrate concrete, empirical knowledge of the themes dealt with in the course
  • Demonstrate general understanding of the institutional and societal framework of course themes
  • Analyse and discuss concrete political and social problems and issues relevant for the themes
  • Apply relevant theoretical and methodological considerations in the exam paper
Type of examination, exam aids and assessment
Written exam, three hour, open book (all aides)
Teaching methods
The course uses lectures and group activities. There is an emphasis upon student participation.

A reading list will be available at the beginning of the semester.
