Case Competition - the general concept
Business case competitions have taken place around the world for a little over two decades now. The first ones were in the United States and were for national schools only. Then the idea evolved that it might be relevant to have international case competitions. Most are still located in North America, as well as Asia.
The majority of the competitions to which we are invited are undergraduate. This is because unfortunately most graduate level case competitions are in North American and are still national.
A business case competition is a great opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills you have gained during your studies at CBS. The extra benefit is that you get to apply that knowledge and usually on a real case for a real company and get professional advice.
You will be given a written case about a business. You must develop a solution to the issues it is facing. You are restricted to using only the four members on your team, but you normally have access to the internet for research.
How does a competition work?
Each university sends a team of students (usually four) accompanied by their coach or faculty advisor. We currently participate in competitions that have as few as eight schools all the way up to 30 schools competing for the First Place Trophy. You will be given the same business case and then sequestered from the other students and your faculty advisor for anywhere from 24 to 60 hours. During that time you:
  • Read the business case (these can be between 2 and 50 pages)
  • Identify the issues
  • Develop a plan to resolve the issues
  • Prepare a presentation to communicate your plan for the "board of directors" - panel of judges

The CBS Case Competition
Many at CBS confuse case competition to be only about the CBS Case Competition. This is probably because CBS has its own case competition that is completely run by students. It is an annual event that takes place in week 9 or 10. It has a fantastic reputation around the world, and it is not only the best competition in the world (I can say that, because I have been to many and none compare to it!), it is currently the only undergraduate case competition in Europe.
If you want to know more about the CBS CC or if you are interested in being a part of the enthusiastic group of students who run the competition, look at their website www.casecompetition.com or send them an email:
