I have been working with the legitimacy problems of the European Union for a number of years. My dissertation (2006) combined a normative discussion about possible legitimacy basis of the European Union with an analysis the various points of view on the sources of the Union’s legitimacy as they were expressed in the Convention on the Future of Europe. In 2008 I have co-authored a book on the Europeanization of the political institutions in Denmark and Sweden. The book examines how the political institutions adapt themselves in order to be able to respond adequately both to the institutional exigencies of EU membership and the demand for democratic and constitutional legitimation of the national EU policy.
My current research concerns anti-discrimination policies and integration policies in Denmark and other European countries. The main focus is on the political integration of immigrant minorities in the national political life in Denmark, Sweden, Britain and France. The research is based on the general question of what it takes to be recognised as a legitimate interlocutor and participant in the political life in the respective countries. The research asks what the forms of recognition are that are available to immigrant minorities and to what extent they are required to rid themselves of their cultural and religious particularities in order to be included politically.
