External examiners

Information to external examiners

This page provides information to external examiners serving at the business language and business administration programmes of:
External examiners are those appointed to serve as examiners by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Almost 2/3 of them work for companies and organisations that recruit graduates from the universities and they are, therefore, referred to as "employer examiners". Approximately 1/3 of the external examiners hold university posts as associate professors, senior associate professors or full-time professors.
The formal foundation on which external examiners serve is the External Examiners' Order. Under the provisions of the Order, external examiners have a duty to ensure:
  1. that the requirements for exams in the business administration and business language degree programmes are consistent with the objectives defined in the degree regulations
  2. that exams are conducted in conformity with the rules
  3. that students are given a fair and uniform treatment, and that their performance is reliably assessed
  4. that on a national level, the Chairmen’s Committee of External Examiners gives advice on the quality and adequacy of the degree programmes viewed in relation to the job market and continued studies.
External examiners are appointed/reappointed for a period of four years. The existing appointments expire on 31 March 2010. For each new appointment period, almost 25% of the existing external examiners have to be replaced.
  • After the completion of each exam, the external examiner has to submit a report to the relevant Chairmen’s Committee, via the university, accounting for the conduct of the exam. See below for the external examiners' report form
  • External examiners also participate in hearing complaints and appeals. To read more, see the Examinations Order and the Assessment Guidelines below
  • Read more about the appointment and service of external examiners in the External Examiners' Order below.

Internal second examiners

The Examinations' Order provides a possibility for other teachers at a university to serve as second examiners. The requirements imposed on internal second examiners in relation to assessment of exams are the same as those defined for external examiners.
