Research Areas

The Department of Operations Management (OM) is engaged in research and teaching related to production, distribution, product and process development management as well as information and communication in and about modern industrial and service companies.
The department's major strategic research focus areas are at present (1) interorganisational relations and (2) performance management. Interorganisational relations primarily deal with supply chain management, cooperation between companies, networking, e-business and e-trading together with mechanisms of interorganisational knowledge sharing. The department's effort is concerned with research into management of such interorganisational relations. Performance management deals with effects and values, which are often based on information, representation, reporting, incentives and communication concerning the economy of the company. In this context focus is often on the management objects such as knowledge, quality, environmental and social responsibility, in addition to a number of modern management techniques such as integrated performance management systems, ERP systems, modern financial calculation methods and intellectual capital statements.
The business research unit, Centre of Business Development and Management Technology, is affiliated to the department. The centre's activities are financed by private sector companies, and its projects are developed in close cooperation with the companies.
Some of the cornerstones in the department's research projects are:
  • Supply Chain Management
  • New Economy
  • Production Philosophies and Systems
  • Product Development
  • Knowledge Management and Intellectual Capital Statement
  • Quality and Environmental Management
  • Service Production
  • Management Control/Accounting
These elements are often combined in particular research activities.
The department's research is internationally oriented, and it often rests upon cooperation with private and public sector organisations and international institutions. A substantial part of the department's research is carried out in cooperation with technical universities.
As an indicator of the department's part in the international research society it is worth mentioning that the department in the spring of 2002 will organise and host the European Operations Management Conference, EurOMA, in collaboration with the Centre for Industrial Production, Aalborg University.
The department is quite internationally oriented, which the number of articles published in 2001 reflects. They include among others the following journals: Management Accounting and Research, Accounting Organizations and Society, Scandinavian Journal of Management, Financial Accountability and Management, European Accounting Review, Journal of Business Logistics, International Journal of Logistics Management, International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management, and International Journal of Logistics Research and Application.
