Research Fields
The overall research field of the Department of International Economics and Management is " International Business" which can be defined as all the cross-frontier business activities related to goods, capital, individuals, and knowledge. The research is based on the phenomenon "the internationally working corporation". By this is understood a corporation which is involved in cross-frontier trade or business related investment. Basically, research in International Business field deals with the interaction between corporations and foreign markets or business environments in which they operate.
In relation to the research field of International Business it is the prevailing opinion that international business activities implies other challenges than business operating within a single country. International Business is not a discipline like marketing, finance or accounting, but the study of an object and a specific phenomenon, i.e. the business activities of international corporations.
INT has chosen to cover this broad research field by concentrating on four core areas for which the Department has developed special competence areas. As mentioned below the core areas will be defined and the specific competence areas will be identified. The competence areas can be defined as the research field, which have obtained external recognition either by being published internationally or by attracting external research funds.
- The International Business Environment
The importance of the New Environment in Asia and Central and East Europe on the corporations' international competitive conditions are significant competence areas. These competence areas have attracted a considerable amount of external research funds and have resulted in several publications.
Furthermore the research focuses on the effects of The Development in the EU and the General Tendency towards Globalization of the international business activities. In particular, the consequences for the corporations' competitiveness and the corporations' choice when deciding on where to conduct business are brought in focus. - The Internationalization Process
Another central competence area is the study of Danish Corporations' International Development. This includes among others the dynamic studies of the corporations' learning processes and competence development, and the changes made in relation to competence improvement and organization. This research is to a large extent made in co-operation with the Confederation of Danish Industries ( Dansk Industri).
At the Department an important competence has also been developed within the studies of various market operation forms and the corporations' development of Network Competence. One aspect is how network relations influence the corporation's possibilities for development. - International Business Strategy
Within this core area, which comprehends studies of the corporations' international challenges and strategic alternatives for action, several competence areas can be identified. One is Corporate Governance, which has resulted in a large number of publications. Another is the study of strategies for Governance of Foreign Subsidiary Companies, which is the main theme of the Centre of Excellence (CoE) Project. Furthermore, the Department has developed an important competence in the study of corporations' international acquisition strategies. - Organization and Management of the International Firm
During the last years the Department has strengthened its competence in the research area of Management and Knowledge Processes in international groups and strategic alliances. This has been done by recruiting new senior researchers and by participating in important research projects such as the LINK Project ("Learning, Incentives and Knowledge").
The construction of management systems and organization of cross-cultural and cross-border business activities is another competence area of the Department. This area includes the implementation of HRM in Asia and East Europe (the SODIAC Project).
Method
Since research in the field of International Business deals with a specific phenomenon with many different aspects it is an interdisciplinary research area related to many theories, disciplines (such as financing, industrial policy and sociology) and research methods.
Therefore many theories are used and many themes are dealt with. For instance, the basic theories used for the study of the internationalisation process comprehends elements of business economic growth theory, resource based theory of business strategy, organization- and management theory, network theory, etc. Another characteristic of the field is the importance attached to empirical research in relation to cases and to quantitative studies.

Evaluation of the publishing
In 2001 the Department has distinguished itself by extensive and varied publishing strategy in the field of International Business. The Department culture values international publishing and gives a high priority to assure a good combination of senior researchers with considerable publication records and young researchers aiming for publishing articles in international known journals.
The academic staff is aiming for having their papers presented at international conferences and at having their research published. Several of the researchers at the Department are involved in large externally financed projects such as the CoE, LINK and SODIAC projects. This has contributed to stimulate the publishing activities. The Department has managed to get more articles published in international journals such as Journal of International Business Studies, Academy of Management Executive, Long Range Planning, International Business Review and Industrial Marketing Management. Consequently, in 2001 the Department has achieved its goals in increasing the level of internationalisation and strengthening the publication profile. It is also positive that the Department's publication activity is not only displayed by a few individuals, but by a large group of researchers.A factor, which has contributed to the Department's development as a research unit is the engagement in the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS). Torben Pedersen being web side editor and Klaus Meyer being book review editor are mainstays of the journal. Another evidence of the increasing international acknowledgement of the research environment at the Department is the appointment of Snejina Michailova as European editor of the Journal of World Business. At the same time the Department has succeeded attracting more internationally acknowledged senior researchers with important publication records. It is expected that the positive development will continue in the years to come
