CBS' supreme authority is the Board of Directors, which is composed of 11 members. Of these six are externally appointed members:

The Chairman and Deputy Chairman are elected by the Board of Directors from among the external members.

CBS's activities are regulated by the Danish Universities Act 2003. The Governing Board convened for the first time on 20 November, 2003. One of its first tasks was to formulate the legislative framework that was approved by the Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation in June 2004.
