Prerequisite/progression of the course

The course is open to non-native speakers of English.

Course content, structure and teaching

This course is designed to develop both oral and written English skills. Students will work on developing a broader vocabulary base and strengthening their business language skills to function more efficiently in English, both academically and in the workplace.

The course will focus on developing the following skills:

  • Effective reading
  • Academic and business writing
  • English as an international language
  • Oral communication
  • Grammar sufficient for intermediate level skills and above
  • General and business vocabulary
Learning Objectives

The learning objectives to achieve within English for Business Purposes are:

  • To be able to follow lectures in English
  • To be able to present coherent argumentation on both concrete and abstract topics
  • To read and understand articles and reports on current problems
  • To have sufficient vocabulary to express oneself generally and academically
  • To communicate fluently
  • To be able to summarise and critique a wide variety of texts
  • To develop an argument systematically in a composition or report, emphasizing decisive points ans including supporting details
Teaching methods

Seminar style teaching with interactive class discussions and peer critique. There will be case study presentations which will allow students to practise their oral skills and develop the necessary competence for dialogues in an English business environment.

Examination

Final exam: 4-hour written exam, computer based (closed book).

The examination will comprise one detailed grammar question, two textual analyses and a case study. The two textual analyses will focus on text comprehension and the ability to summarise and critique. The case study will be a summary of a business problem with recommendations presented as a business report. Special attention will be paid to coherence, clarity of thought, a clearly structured presentation and strong argumentation.

Re-take exam: 24-hour written exam.
