CBS project was easy to put into practice
Martin Berg needed a broader management perspective, which he found at CBS.

Every two weeks Martin Berg spent part of his weekend at Copenhagen Business School where he learned to develop a business plan, which, on the following Monday, he would implement at his workplace, NCC Construction Denmark, located in Hellerup north of Copenhagen.
Due to the real life character of the course ‘Business Plan Process’ this is, in broad outline, how Martin Berg spent the fall semester of his second Executive Certificate in Business Development and Innovation at the CBS Executive MBA program.
“I was able to use more or less all the tools that were demonstrated to me at CBS,” says Martin Berg, who during this semester worked with the modernisation of the large construction company’s own business unit for building materials, E-træ & Bygningsartikler, which included directing its focus on external customers under the name Bygdirekte A/S.

“CBS and the courses I took at the EMBA program helped me develop Bygdirekte from an internally to an externally oriented business,” explains Martin Berg, who already in the month of November had the satisfaction of seeing the 18-year old subsidiary change its name as well as its strategy.
“The CBS program as a whole has been a great success. The teachers are highly competent and the dialogue with my fellow students has been fantastic. Although we come from different industries, the challenges we face are often the same,” Martin Berg explains. After completing his MSc in Economics and Management at the University of Copenhagen in 2000, Martin Berg worked as a consultant at the global management consulting firm A.T. Kearney until 2004 when he became an employee of NCC. Since then he has been promoted several times, and today holds the posts as director of Bygdirekte and director of an NCC unit with DKK 700 million in annual turnover.
“I needed to gain more knowledge about general management, and this is exactly what I acquired at CBS. In the long run I would like to focus even more on strategic management,” says Martin Berg who chose NCC as case study for the majority of his assignments.“I consider it a great advantage that thirteen assignments out of fifteen have dealt with the company I work for. The fact that my assignments were so realistic that a number of the cases could be implemented immediately was extremely rewarding. And if one day I should move to a different position within the organisation I would still be able to deploy most of the acquired methods,” Martin Berg concludes.
