Course content, structure and teaching
The digital economy is reshaping the ways companies are doing business. This transforms the organization as radically as telephone, railroads and airline travel transformed the economy in the past. Consequently, future managers need to understand how to shape the right IT strategy, transformation process while creating value. The purpose of the course is to offer the students the opportunity to develop their knowledge to understand the management and leadership concepts, skills and business opportunities that surround the use of information technology. The course content applies Management, Organizational and Economic theories on the strategic use of Information Technology and how to manage and create corporate value with IT. The course includes a number of guest lectures, business cases describing actual business decisions, reports on emerging technologies and interactive and intense class discussions. So that the student will acquire competences, within the field of IT strategy, IT value creation, IT economics and IT business modeling.
The course's development of personal competences
Since cases are prepared and presented in teams, the students will develop cooperative skills as well as time and self-management. Through dialog, presentation and discussions the student will develop their oral, communication and presentation skills. Development of individual and social skills, like problem identification and problem solving.
Learning Objectives
The objective of the course is to provide the students with an opportunity to learn to apply qualifications (knowledge and skills) in IT Strategy and Economics and the associated subjects like IT Transformation, IT Business Modeling and IT Value Creation. The course provides a strategic perspective on the corporate development, transformation, use and management of IT. In order to achieve the grade 12 at the exam/mini-project the students must be able to:
- take part in strategic planning using IT in different business contexts
- take a proactive role in proposing relevant tools and techniques for using IT on a strategic level
- formulate strategies where IT plays an important role
- master the most relevant terminology for IT business modeling
- argue the value case of the relevance of IT for business leaders
- can assess the strategic and economic implications and opportunities with IT Outsourcing.
Type of examination, exam aids and assessment
A miniproject. Please note that the students are not entitled to supervision
