ORIGINAL CALL FOR PROPOSALS
To prepare the ground for the UN Conference on Climate Change (COP15) in December 2009, Copenhagen Business School will host an international conference on sustainable leadership and climate change in partnership with UN Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) [1]. Through its climate initiative CBS Climate Strategies for Business (CBS-CSB), CBS seeks to build a strong social sciences research network allowing business schools to contribute to climate solutions.
Background and outline
Today, climate change is a business reality and represents a clear and unprecedented challenge for human society. Social sciences and business research has a huge potential in contributing to sustainable solutions. Development of new business models, knowledge on innovation processes, environmental legislation issues, structuring of carbon markets, integrating energy efficiency into business plans and management, GHG accounting etc. etc. are examples of important research topics – as complements to climate solutions involving hard sciences and engineering.
Responsible management education also has a huge potential for the dissemination of climate solutions by providing future business leaders and managers with knowledge on sustainable business solutions and ability to act in the era of climate change. The conference is intended as a first building block in the reform of management education and research in this area. In addition to presentations, workshops and round tables on research projects, the conference will deal with the necessary changes in curricula and with development of teaching on sustainability at all levels of study. This is needed more than ever.
At the conference, academics, practitioners and students will discuss how business schools can help solve the climate crisis through new educational approaches, sustainable leadership, innovative business models and new forms of partnerships.
Topics to be covered
The goal of the two-day conference is to highlight social science research contribution to solving the climate crisis and to define the road map for the integration of climate change concerns in the education of business leaders. Day 1 provides a forum for interaction between business leaders, deans and management students allowing them to discuss management education and curricula change in light of the climate challenge. Day 2 is devoted to presentations and discussions of climate change research in the social sciences. Business and teaching cases could be presented both days.
We aim to maintain an interactive dialogue among participants, call for submission of proposals for presentation of existing efforts in the areas of:
1. Sustainable leadership and climate change
2. The role of the business schools in consideration of social and environmental impacts of business activities
3. Experience with changing management curricula to reflect climate concerns
4. How social science may contribute to increasing carbon efficiency using existing technologies
5. How social science may further innovation and the adoption of new clean tech technologies
6. How social science may facilitate the development of appropriate public policy and regulation
7. How social science may fill the void between scientists, business people and politicians
Guidelines for proposals
All proposals must be relevant to the theme and sub-themes of the PRME /CBS International conference on Responsible Management Education: Sustainable Leadership in the Era of Climate Change. Proposals should have clearly stated objectives. We also seek project abstracts reflecting creative ways that research has been applied and or processed to curriculum change.
Proposals should
  • Identify which of the seven areas outlined above it contributes to
  • Provide a description of key issues to be addressed and main messages/conclusions
  • Be no longer than 350 words, excluding title and author’s names and contact information
  • Be submitted in English in Word or PDF format
  • Have all abbreviations explained
  • Be submitted electronically to prme@cbs.dk no later than 21 September 2009
  • Provide contact details for authors with presenting author clearly identified
Answers to proposals are given 6 October 2009. Final presentations are expected two weeks before the conference. Specific presentations will be invited to contribute to a forthcoming special issue.
