Our research is organized in four different tracks which contribute to our vision in different ways. The main research questions that we ask in each track, and the kind of answers that we pursue in our research, are listed in the table below.
A. Translation systems
Q: How can we design computer systems that can assist us in language-related tasks?
A: Automatic machine translation. Translation tools with eye-tracking. Speech technology. Machine learning.
B. Translation products
Q: What is the linguistic structure of translated texts? What is the linguistic structure of the source and target text, and what is the correlation between them?
A: Unified theories of text, speech and meaning from subword units to entire texts and dialogues. Large treebank collections of annotated text and speech.
C. Translation processes
Q: How do humans process translations and other forms of language?
A: Reverse-engineering human reading, writing, and translation processes. Monitoring language users with key-logging and eye-tracking. Determining the needs of language users in real time.
D. Translation practice
Q: How do businesses and individuals actually use language and language technology? How should they use it?
A: Best practices for translation, revision, quality management, and training. Best practices for the deployment of machine translation and other language technology.
