Changes in business content. A comparative media content analysis covering selected print media in the Nordic countries from 1960 to 2000. In each country a number of general newspapers and business newspapers will be selected for study. All content from one week in 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000 will be coded and analyzed quantitatively to discern shifts in content over time in terms of topics, actors, genre etc. This comparative quantitative analysis will be supplemented by qualitative studies of particular events or cases in each country to discern process characteristics of media reporting on business issues.
The emergence of business journalism. An interview based study of the formation of a professional field of business journalism in the Nordic countries. Through in-depth interviews with experienced practitioners, in particular journalists and editors but also pr-professionals, we map how business journalism evolved as a distinct area of specialization governed by particular criteria of relevance and quality. The interview should also enable us to discern changes in media-source relations and in changing production processes in the business press.
The institutions of business newsmaking. A historical institutional analysis of media organizations and the fields in which they operate. Through existing historical and statistical sources - supplemented by interview data - the trajectories of media producers are mapped - in terms of editorial profile, ownership, overall organization, marked share and business strategy. A particular emphasis will be put on the role of transnational media corporations in the Nordic countries.
