Niels Mygind blev cand. Polit. i 1980 fra Københavns Universitet og derpå kandidatstipendiat på Handelshøjskolen ved Institut for Nationaløkonomi, hvor han blev adjunkt i 1983. Han var med til at starte SPRØK-uddannelsen i 1984. Efter et år i USA på Cornell University blev han i 1987 lektor ved instituttet. I de første år var hans forskning fokuseret på medarbejderejede virksomheder i Norden; men fra Murens fald i 1989 forskede og underviste han i transitionsprocessen i Østeuropa. I 1994 udgav han bogen: Omvæltning i Øst og han har siden udgivet en lang række artikler om transitionen, privatiseringsprocessen og ændringerne i ejerformer især i de Baltiske lande med vægt på udviklingen i selskabsledelse (corporate governance). Han blev leder af det nyoprettede Center for Østeuropa i 1996. I de senere år er perspektivet bredt ud til at omfatte de nye vækstmarkeder herunder BRIK landene, især Rusland og Kina. I 2004 blev Niels Mygind professor MSO og i 2009 professor i International Business. Siden starten af 2008 har han været institutleder for Institut for International Økonomi og Virksomhedsledelse på CBS.
