My current research is mainly focused on the following four areas:
1. Politics and Business Group Formation in China: An analysis of state-owned business groups (national champions) in China and their relationship to the Party-state. The project also discusses the formation of an managerial elite in charge of these major companies and how this elite interacts with top leaders in state and Party organizations. This includes a closer investigation of the nomenklatura system and how this system regulates and manages the CEOs and Chairmen of the major Chinese companies. The project also looks at the rotation of leaders between big business and Party and state organizations as well as executive compensation levels in China in an international perspective.
2. State, Party and Public Management in China: The project focuses on the role of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in Governing China and how the CCP has been able to revitalise itself by strengthening its organisational machine and by reaching out to new social strata. It investigates the organisational procedures and capacity of the cadre corps and the civil service system in managing state, society and business in China and discusses recent changes in the personnel systems that the CCP controls through the mechanisms of bianzhi and nomenklatura. The project also discusses recent reform of the public service units (shiye danwei) and the consequences for the public administration in China.
3. State, Society and Business in Hainan: A study of the economic and political reform changes in Hainan special economic zone. It focuses on the reform experiment of "small government big society" and the likely implications for central-provincial as well as provincial-local relations. The study provides an unique in-depth study of the formation and development of the largest Chinese special economic zone.
4. China and the Global Economy: An analysis of China's integration into the global economy. It focuses on three aspects: (1) The domestic economic and political aspects of China's integration into the world economy; (2) social and environmental implications of the Chinese transition process, including stakeholder interests and factional politics; and (3) China's regional and global position in terms of trade and investment and the competitiveness of its large corporations.
