Organizing for Internal and External Knowledge Creation and Innovation: The Role of Resources

The conference will be a continuation of a conference on "Organizing for Internal and External Knowledge Creation and Innovation: Looking within or Searching Beyond?" held at Copenhagen Business School on October 29-30, 2008. The conference clearly identified resources and lack of resources as a central element to be understood if we wish to gain ground in understanding the link between organizational design/architecture and open innovation strategies.
Therefore, with this second conference we intend to bridge open innovation and organizational architecture/design research, in particular aiming to disentangle the role played by firm-specific resources in shaping innovation strategy in terms of acquisition, exchange, and creation of knowledge. The heterogeneity of firms triggered by differences in the resources availability may indeed shape their innovativeness. If not directly by imposing boundaries on the internal search process, then by affecting the degree to which firms are able to extract knowledge from external sources of knowledge and information.
This idea is embraced by the open innovation literature. However, still too little is known about how resource configurations promote internal and external knowledge search. In addition, the open innovation literature widely treats organizational design as being fixed across these otherwise heterogeneous firms, neglecting the investigation of how particular resource configurations fits into specific organizational structures and how this in turn affects firms' abilities to conduct search for innovations. Although we have lately seen a few contributions addressing such question, there is still a need for further theoretical thinking and empirical evidence.
Confirmed invited speakers for the conference include Paul Almeida (McDonough School of Business - Georgetown University), Robert DeFillippi (Sawyer Business School, Suffolk University), Justin Jansen (Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University), Aija Leiponen (Cornell University).
