In 2010, I started a new FP7 EU research project “Enhancing connectivity between research and policy-making in sustainable consumption” ( CORPUS ) on Knowledge brokerage between policy and research. The aim of this activity is to experiment and develop new integrative modalities of linking research results to policy-making through 'secondary exploitation' of existing research. The project will focus on the policy issue of ‘sustainable consumption’ which is of great importance in the current and future strategic development of the EU. It is included, for instance, in the re-launched Lisbon Strategy and is one of the key challenges of renewed EU SDS. Action Plans on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) have been published in a number of Member States and recently on EU level, as well.
Since 2006 and until 2012, I am chairing the Working Area “Consumer Science” in a multidisciplinary EU FP6 Integrated Project on childhood obesity with the acronym IDEFICS (Identification and prevention of dietary- and lifestyle-induced health effects in children and infants). IDEFICS will deliver reliable data to make an European-wide assessment of the problem of "obesity in children" possible. It also includes an intervention on 17.000 children between the age of two and ten.
Beyond that, I am engaged in several smaller research projects funded by both private and public sources, dealing with, amongst others: sustainable consumption, consumption and climate issues, ethical investment, compulsive consumption, the EU Energy-using products Directive, behavioural economics and consumer policy, and of course, Corporate Social Responsibility issues and consumers.
As a consultant for consumer and food policy issues to the German Federal government, to the government of the German State of Baden-Wuerttemberg, and to the DG Sanco in Brussels, I am interested in political strategies and developments from a consumer's perspective. Since 2010, I am a Member of the "Rat fuer nachhaltige Entwicklung" (RNE) - German Council for Sustainable Development (RNE), consulting the German Chancellor.
Finally, as an Editor of the international Journal of Consumer Policy (Springer Academic Publishers), I am welcoming manuscripts that discuss a variety of consumer research and consumer policy topics. I am currently editing a special issue on "Behavioural Economics, Consumer Policy, and Consumer Law – An Interdisciplinary Perspective".
