Sine Nørholm Just is a communications scholar working at the interdisciplinary nexus of the social sciences and the humanities. She studies rhetorical processes of meaning formation, focusing on issues of legitimacy, identity, and public opinion.
Currently, Sine’s research centers upon two main areas:
Market formation: markets are inherently social and dynamic, and the production of markets is, to a large extent, rhetorical/discursive. In seeking to understand how markets are created, sustained, and changed, Sine focuses attention on the rhetorical struggles in and through which markets become meaningful. She currently studies the rhetorical enactment of real estate, seeing this as a critical case for developing a general theory of rhetorical market formation. In pursuing the theoretical ambition, Sine seeks to provide a synthesis of the rhetoric and the sociology of economics.
The constitutionalization of the EU: issues of European integration and reform are inseparable from issues of public opinion of and public debate on the EU. Sine studies the complex interrelations of formalized processes of political reform (e.g. treaty changes) and the EUropean public sphere. She is particularly interested in the EU’s so-called democratic and communicative deficits and explores whether and how a European constitution may spark stronger identification with and legitimization of the EU. In so doing, Sine is particularly inspired by, but also critical of, the work of Jürgen Habermas.
Furthermore, Sine maintains a broad interest in issues of political, intercultural and organizational/corporate communication. She is currently studying the possibilities and constraints that individuals encounter when engaging with organizations and/or social groups. Taking a poststructuralist perspective, she analyzes and critiques theories and practices of diversity management as well as other forms of organizational and cultural subjectivation.
