2001: Chinese Teacher Training Program focused on Modern Chinese Phonetics

Prerequisite/progression of the course
This program is designed for those who are interested in teaching Chinese or will soon become employed as Chinese language teachers in Danish elementary schools or language schools run by local Chinese in Denmark, especially for those who do not have sufficient knowledge of modern Chinese phonetics and, therefore, hope to get some basic knowledge in the relevant field and learn how to teach Chinese phonetics through a short-term training program.
Aim of the course
After completing this course, participants should have obtained basic knowledge concerning Chinese phonetics and know some methods of teaching phonetics, which will help them to teach Chinese phonetics in the future.
Course content, structure and teaching
The course introduces participants to: systems of consonants, vowels and tones in modern Chinese; key points and difficulties in teaching Chinese phonetics; basic methods in phonetic training, pronunciation training and correction of pronunciation during classes, etc.
The course is supposed to consist of 5 sessions, each of 3-hour duration. Sessions are given as lectures combined with exercises.
Time: Thursdays each week, in the period between April 12 and May 10, 2012, both dates included.

Session 1: importance of teaching phonetics in modern Chinese; frame for teaching phonetics; level of Mandarin Chinese a Chinese language teacher should reach; methods in teaching phonetics and reference materials, etc.

Session 2: systems of consonants and vowels in modern Chinese; difficulties in pronouncing Chinese consonants and vowels; how to guide students to pronounce correctly, etc.

Session 3: modern Chinese tone system; difficulties in teaching tones (shift rules applied to the 3rd tone; no shift in tones; continuous shifts in tones; the neutral or ”toneless” tone, etc.); methods in teaching tones.

03/05
Session 4: training in reading monosyllabic, disyllabic and polysyllabic compounds, correction of pronunciation.

10/05
Session 5: training in reading passages and correction of pronunciation; training in speaking Chinese and correction of pronunciation.
   
Learning Objectives
After the training program, participants should have obtained general knowledge of modern Chinese phonetic system, key points and difficulties in phonetic teaching and basic teaching methods in phonetics.

The course is based on materials compiled and written by course teachers.
