La nación en América Latina – ¿objeto obsoleto o recurso básico?

The Nation in Latin America – obsolete object or a basic resource?

Hace décadas algunos teóricos vaticinaban la muerte de la nación o al menos su paulatina reducción en el contexto de la globalización. Hoy somos testigos de que no solamente no ocurre, sino que la nación va cobrando importancia creciente como marco o actor económico o político o como recurso identitario. Uno de los factores clave en este proceso parece haber sido los cambios políticos vistos en los últimos años en casi todo el continente.
Para debatir estos y otros temas relacionados con la nación y el estado nacional, organizará el Center for the Study of the Americas un seminario en que esperamos contar con la presencia de investigadores de diferentes instituciones que tengan interés por la discusión de estos temas en un contexto latinoamericano.

The idea of the decreasing importance of the nation due to globalization has often been heard and might be relevant in some contexts. However, looking at developments in Latin America in recent years, it becomes evident that the nation rather seems to have an increasing importance as an economic, political and/or identity resource. A key factor in this process seems to be recent political changes, including the so-called ‘left wave’.
In order to debate these and other subjects related to concepts such as the nation, nation-state and others in a Latin American context, the Center for the Study of the Americas organizes a seminar with the participation of researchers form various institutions and with various theoretical and disciplinary perspectives.
