CAICT Assistant Professor Ravi Vatrapu was interviewed about Flash Mob Marketing on DR1’s news magazine, 21 SØNDAG that aired on 30-May-2010.
Flash Mob Marketing involves staging a seemingly organically improvised but nevertheless carefully orchestrated advertising event in a public setting. In one sense, it is the fusion of public performative art, improve, advertising, smart mobs and social media. A couple of examples of flash mob marketing campaigns that has viral video success are:
T-Mobile’s Liverpool Street Station Dance
Arriva’s Mukhtars Fødselsdag
According to Dr. Vatrapu, flash mob marketing has the positive benefit of creating a positive brand association by tapping into the lifestyle aspirations of the modern consumers. At the same time it has the negative cost of being sociologically disruptive besides being intrusive.
