Like many other countries in the world, China is also pursuing the creative industries. In this presentation, Marina Guo will discuss the creative industries strategy of China. The Chinese government is drawing lessons and inspiration from other countries pursuing the same goals. There are Chinese contextual issues and challenges. For example, the Chinese are seen to be docile and lacking in creativity; such stereotypes have to be corrected if foreign investments in the creative industries are to flow into the country. In fact there already numerous successes in the Chinese creative industries - such as in R & D and the arts. But can China compete with other countries in this area?
Marina Guo is an entrepreneur, a researcher and a creative facilitator. She is doing a Ph.D. in Economics at Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, and is also Director of Int'l Affairs at the Research Center for Creative Industries, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. In 2003, Marina Guo founded Shanghai Sunspirit Cultural Development Co., Ltd which is a leading organization in cultural communication and arts education for children and young people. Being the practitioner of international cultural exchanges, Marina Guo has initiated and produced several groundbreaking pilot projects in performing arts and visual arts between China and Europe. Since 2007, Marina has been General Manager of Shanghai Yorkie Investment Co., Ltd which offers consulting services in enterprise management, project development, policy on creative industries and international marketing strategy. Working as a researcher, Marina Guo made a systematic research on creative industries in China, and edited the book "Creative Industries Are Changing China" newly written by her doctoral supervisor Prof. Li Wuwei, and was published by Xinhua Press in 2009.
