Aim of the course
This seminar presents the foundational features of the philosophy of science as a fundamental approach to building "warranted belief" -- i.e., to building credible theory -- in the context of management research.

We begin by clarifying the ontological, phenomenological, and epistemological foundations of the scientific method. We elaborate the conceptual meanings of and interrelationships among scientific theories, models, propositions, hypotheses, constructs, empirical tests, and empirical results in a scientific research design. We then consider fundamental issues in selecting theories, building models, generating research propositions, “translating” propositions into testable hypotheses, identifying and measuring constructs, designing empirical tests, and interpreting empirical results in creating effective and feasible research designs. In so doing, we clarify the logic that underlies the building of warranted belief through scientific methodology. We then discuss some specific challenges in using scientific methodology in building normative management theory.

We then consider philosophical differences in "quantitative" versus "qualitative" research styles. We also address the impossibility of conducting truly "theory-free" research, and consider the challenges to achieving “objectivity” in conducting grounded theory building.

The seminar concludes by considering how the process of science becomes embedded in social institutions and communities of practice, and we elaborate implications of social embeddedness of scientific research processes for conducting scientific research.
