Case Study Research – “A Case for Cases”

Faculty
Prof. Peter Abell, London School of Economics
Course Coordinator
Aseem Kinra
Aim of the course
Often case study research is ascribed a merely exploratory role. Through a discussion of the philosophical underpinnings of case study research this seminar takes up the question of whether and how there can be a larger role for case study research. A central theme of the seminar is the underlying logic of causal explanations of scientific research. This seminar is relevant to all PhD students with an interest in questions of causality and explanation within case study research. The seminar will be chaired by Professor Peter Abell, London School of Economics and Political Science and Visiting Professor at CBS. Before attending the seminar it is suggested to read Abell, P. (2009) ‘A Case for Cases Comparative Narratives in Sociological Explanation’ in Sociological Methods & Research, 38, 38-70.
