Aim of the course
This workshop is for PhD students who are serious about improving their writing skills in English. It is an 8-week course, meeting once a week for three hours. Participants are expected to be working on a writing project while they are following the course, devoting at least 5 hours per week (outside the workshop) to developing an article for publication (for people who are in the late stages of article or dissertation writing, certain exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis). Students are expected to attend every meeting of the workshop and will present their work in a master-class format at least once and hopefully twice. The course will cover the basic principles of composition, and will provide continuous feedback on style and grammar. Students will be introduced to the mechanics of sentence and paragraph construction, and will develop a good working sense of the basic structure of an academic article. They will learn how to outline a paper and how to analyze a paper in later stages of the process. They will write an abstract, introduction and conclusion, as well as methods, theory, results, analysis, and discussion sections. By the end of the course, the students will have a paper formally in shape for submission to a journal, conference, workshop, or seminar.
There are limited places available for this course, so sign up early.
