PhD defence: Christian Wymann

Drawing on sociological systems theory and a variety of empirical material, the thesis investigates tattooing as a social phenomenon. It suggests that tattooing is constituted by both economic and artistic communication, while emerging in a special form of communication called parallax.
The thesis shows that due to its special form tattooing has effects on how it is organized and described. While the study focuses on tattooing and related social phenomena, it also suggests that the chosen approach may be useful for the analysis of other phenomena.
