This course applies to all PhD students
Prerequisite/progression of the course
Each participating PhD student has to write a three-five pages paper presenting key method problems or issues related to his/her project. The paper functions as input to group work and to the group discussion with faculty.
Learning Objectives
The aim of the course is to enable the PhD students to:
- understand the complexity in choosing between different qualitative methods
- understand the problems of practice and the role of the researcher doing qualitative social studies
- identify and analysfe the aims and purposes of qualitative research, strengths and weaknesses, in relation to problem formulation, research planning and design, cases on interviewing, and documentary methods, discussions on observing, focus group research, narratives, and other methods in qualitative research
- identify and analyse key issues involved in planning, conducting and writing up qualitative analyses
- identify and analyse the PhD students' own key methodological issues by presenting and discussing their own paper in groups.

Teaching methods
The course will involve the students in discussions on the role of the qualitative researcher in collecting and analysing data and other types of information in different organisational settings. Each participating PhD student has to write a three-five pages paper presenting key method problems or issues related to his/her project. The paper functions as input to group work and to the group discussion with faculty.
