Prerequisite/progression of the course
Students should have a broad, general understanding of the philosophical, humanistic tradition of inquiry within management and organizational studies; they will be required to complete a series of assigned readings; they will be required to attend all sessions of the course and participate actively in the seminar discussions; they will be required to write a short (10-page) paper and submit it for evaluation by the professor.
Aim of the course
The goal of the course is to explore the concept of courage in reference to relevant philosophical and management theories. Case illustrations of courage will be drawn from historical and contemporary management literature. Special attention will be paid to the modes of personal and organizational development through which courage may be cultivated as a virtue.
Learning Objectives
Students will gain a) a greater understanding of the philosophical history of the concept of courage; b) a greater appreciation of the need for courage in organizational contexts; and c) an experiential sense of how courage can be cultivated as virtue.
