New Book on Trust in Management
A new book on trust in management (Tilliden og magten) addresses management when things become difficult: when the manager must have confidence in employees’ ability to think for themselves. Through an amusing historical narrative, the book provides an account of the power and management paradigms faced by modern management. They are all based on the idea that managers devise ideas and employees act. Management based on trust breaks up with this distinction. Instead, organizations should take advantage of the huge potential in letting the individual employee think for him or herself. But how is trust in management being practiced? The book shows that management based on trust profitably may incorporate three obligations: the obligation to give, to receive, and to orchestrate this exchange.
The authors are: Associate Professor, PhD Niels Thygesen, Associate Professor, PhD Steen Vallentin, and Professor, Dr.Phil Sverre Raffnsøe. The authors are all affiliated with the Department of Management, Politics and Philosophy.
Coincidence or Genius? How Accidents Lead to Innovation
Mistakes and coincidences within innovation and creativity often result in new and better inventions than the originally intended ones. For instance, the inventions that lead to the success products Viagra and Post-it Notes was originally intended to be two entirely different products, namely heart medicine and strong glue.
In an article titled “Oops” published in the Wall Street Journal, CBS Professor Robert D. Austin and two of his research colleagues explain how managers can encourage their employees to be inventive and how, by making mistakes, employees learn to think beyond their habits and boundaries. Additionally, the authors provide good advice on how to encourage these coincidences instead of trying to avoid them.
